Sacred Hearts - Sarah Dunant

Low-key. Mostly inner-monologuing from the main character. I liked the atmosphere, and the uh...slice-of-life-ishness about nuns? All the characters were women, which was cool.

Kind of dragged at the end.

Villette
Villette - Charlotte Brontë
I'm giving it four stars purely because it got me out of a reading rut. And most of it was good! The writing was beautiful and perfect. However, after all that flirting, banter slipping into French, and pet names--Lucy and Ginerva did not end up bumping uglies. I find that mightily atrocious.

Where the Heart Is
Where the Heart Is - Billie Letts
Read this in high school. It involves sadistic homophobia and disability-as-(divine) punishment. Total trash, and not the good kind.

For Such a Time - Kate Breslin
WHAT THE FUCK????

A FUCKING "CHRISTIAN/INSPIRATIONAL" ROMANCE ABOUT A JEWISH WOMAN FALLING IN LOVE WITH A NAZI???

Listen. The pure, unbelievable ignorance it takes to not only write a ROMANCE between a Jewish woman and a Nazi (the head of a fucking concentration camp), but have the MC rely on the Christian bible throughout is fucking heinous.

I think if you took out the long descriptions of "science shit", you'd be left with some pretty corny dialogue and cardboard characters.

Sarah Thornhill
Sarah Thornhill - Kate Grenville
What the hell? What. The. Hell???

From the moment Jack said Will had drowned, this book turned to shit. I know authors think it's clever to not give readers what they want, but there was nothing clever about this shit. The second half of this book was mind-numbing and pointless. Everything was pointless. I am so mad. We already know William Thornhill fucks up everything he touches, I didn't sit through secret river just to watch him fuck everything up for a second time. ARGH.

Also, wow, killing Sal off screen so we can have the evil stepmother?? Really??? Sal should have had to confront her role too. Jesus, nothing was dealt with. It was all teenage crush for the first half, boring marriage to boring man for the second. Nothing came of anything. I call bullshit.

それでも構わない [Soredemo Kamawanai]
それでも構わない [Soredemo Kamawanai] - Masao Sangatsu
This is the cutest fucking thing on the planet.

I thought it was by some unknown person, but I've actually read this author's stuff and loveeeed it, but she changed her style! Which I think is pretty interesting and cool.

Favorite bit:

That little closed mouth kiss in chapter three! Takamine is such an adorable seme. Yaoi is usually so chock full of violence, and this was such a breath of fresh air. Takamine was tearing up because he thought he was forcing a relationship on Okumura with that tiny peck. Ugh, so cute.

I really feel like this was an exemplary way of having jealousy and possessiveness, but not at the detriment of the uke. And Okumura! Older, wiser, taking care of Takamine. My favorite kind of uke :D Aurgh. I want more.

Haru wo Daiteita - Embracing Love - Vol.01
Haru wo Daiteita - Embracing Love - Vol.01 - Youka Nitta
This is a long ass Yaoi with switching, but the couple usually sticks to a younger seme/older uke dynamic.

So. Much. Drama. And angst, and shouting, and it gets a little confusing sometimes. But I read the whole freaking thing and it's entertaining to say the least. I love how much the couple loves each other.

Also! there's one page with spanking : >

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain, Guy Cardwell, John Seelye
Huh. This was the first time reading Huck Finn for me.

Huck's keen observations while maintaining a lot of innocent was good. The humor was good. I want to write a fanfic for the two fraudsters, of course. They're practically canon.

However: Yeah, the end was totally a cop out. Twain lost his nerve and pandered to his audience, and the story lost its impact.
